Why this site exists

Prepaid gift cards are sold to tens of millions of Americans every year, and the instructions that come with them fit on a piece of cardboard. When something goes wrong — a card that will not work at an online checkout, a balance that reads lower than it should, a text message claiming the card is locked — there is no obvious place to turn.

What people do instead is search. And the phrase they search for most, giftcardmall/mygift, is not a real web address, which makes those search results an unusually dangerous place to be. Lookalike sites and paid advertisements compete for exactly that traffic, and the information they offer is designed to separate people from their card numbers.

We built this site to be the boring, accurate, commercially disinterested answer. Every guide does the same three things: explain what is actually happening, give the concrete steps to fix it, and point at the official channel for anything that touches real card data.

What we will and will not do

• We will never ask for card data. There is no balance-check form, no registration form and no card field anywhere on this website. That is a permanent design decision, not a current limitation.
• We send you to official channels. Every action involving a real card points at the issuer's portal or the number on the back of your card.
• We publish our uncertainty. Fee amounts and program terms vary and change. Where a figure would go stale, we say so and tell you where the authoritative answer lives.
• We correct mistakes in public. Corrections are made on the page with a dated note, not quietly.
• We state our independence everywhere. On every page, in the footer, and in the structured data search engines read.

Who writes this

Guides are produced by the TheGiftCardMall editorial team: writers and researchers with backgrounds in consumer finance journalism and payments. Each guide is researched against primary sources — federal statute and regulator guidance, published cardholder agreements, and the official portal's own behaviour — then reviewed by a second person before publication, and re-reviewed on a schedule.

Running a website costs money and we would rather tell you where ours comes from than let you guess.
